For the design of Nashville restaurant and beer garden Butchertown Hall, the owner hoped to pull inspiration from his own Texas Hill Country upbringing, and from the space’s location in the historic Germantown neighborhood, once nicknamed “Butchertown” for its butcher shop-lined streets. Those sensibilities came together in a modern take on the traditional beer hall concept, with a balanced blend of rustic textures and clean, light finishes. The restaurant’s location is steeped in Germantown history, directly across from Morgan Park, where Frederick Laitenberger's German beer garden once stood. But the pre-renovation space — a simple, one-story block building — didn’t have much in the way of historic features to highlight. To bring old and new into harmony, the space was enlarged and recast with antique white washed bricks, weathered wood, polished concrete and ceiling-height stretches of classic tile, all chosen and placed to complement and contrast with the space’s centerpiece: a state-of-the-art wood-fired grill that anchors the kitchen.
